The Emkarate RL range of freezer oil business was originally part of Uniqema, an ICI Group company in the UK.
On June 29, 2006, CRODA and ICI agreed that CRODA would acquire Uniqema, a subsidiary of ICI, based in Gotha, the Netherlands. This follows Uniqema's acquisition of Castrol's Icematic range of freezer oil business, a subsidiary of BP (British Petroleum).
On November 1, 2007, Lubrizol (USA) officially announced that it has completed the acquisition of CRODA's refrigeration lubricants business. The acquisition includes CRODA's polyol ester and alkylbenzene refrigeration lubricant technologies, patents and associated intellectual property rights for the Emkarate and Icematic brands and customers, and does not include manufacturing facilities. The transaction is operated by a subsidiary, CPI Inc.
Emkarate RL 100HØ Ice Bear Refrigerator Oil is an ISO VG 100 synthetic polyol ester (POE) lubricant designed for use with refrigeration and air conditioning compressors that use HFC refrigerants. This product provides effective wear protection on steel and aluminum surfaces, thereby extending system life and improving efficiency for both initial and service fills. The combination of low temperature characteristics and unparalleled chemical and thermal stability allows the Emkarate RL100H to be used over a wide range of operating temperatures.
